EV Brands That Dominated the Market in 2025
So far, 2025 is shaping up to be a record year for electric vehicle sales in the United States. In the third quarter of this year, Americans bought more than 437,000 EVs, an all-time quarterly high accounting for more than 1-in-every-10 new vehicle sales. Due to the historic surge in consumer demand, 2025 is shaping up to be a record breaking year for EV sales in the United States.
From January through the end of September this year, domestic EV sales have already topped 1 million, exceeding the same period in 2024 by nearly 12%. Notably, however, due to a recent policy shift under the Trump administration, industry experts expect EV sales volume to decline meaningfully in the final months of the year.
A law implemented under the Biden White House allowed qualifying EV buyers to claim a $7,500 tax credit. But under the terms of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, these incentives – originally set to expire in 2032 – were terminated in September of this year. With the end of federal subsidies looming, domestic EV sales surged in the summer months, as tens of thousands of buyers scrambled to take advantage of the favorable market conditions.
To what extent the expiration of tax subsidies impacted EV sales in the remainder of the year remains to be seen. Still, 2025 currently stands out as a historic year for the EV segment in the United States – and quarterly sales data shows that certain automakers have dominated the market so far this year.
Using data from Kelley Blue Book, Climate Crisis 247 identified the EV automakers that dominated the market so far in 2025. We reviewed sales data for 26 EV brands and identified those with the greatest unit sales volume between January and September 2025. Supplemental data on each brand’s best selling model in 2025 is also from KBB.
Among the 10 automotive brands on this list, EV sales in the first nine months of the year range from about 29,000 units to over 450,000. These numbers account for anywhere from about 3% of the domestic EV segment, to 43%.
For each brand on this list, success in the EV segment has been driven largely by a single model. For example, even though Tesla has multiple EVs in their lineup, including the Cybertruck, the Model 3, and the Model S, the Tesla Model Y accounted for nearly 60% of the company’s total sales volume this year. Similarly, Honda, a company that primarily sells internal combustion engine vehicles, introduced the Prologue as the only EV in its line up in 2024. This year, the Prologue’s popularity ranked Honda among the leading EV brands in the United States.
