These Places Have Seen Drastic Shifts in Weather In April
April is a month of transition in the United States, a period when temperatures steadily rise as the first day of summer approaches. In major cities across the country, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, New York, and St. Louis, the average daily temperature rises by 10°F or more between the first day of April and the last, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But as clear and linear as these historical trends may be, in any given year, April is often marked by volatile fluctuations in daily weather – and 2026 has been no exception.
In the first three weeks of April, new daily high temperature records were broken nearly 900 times across the country, from New England to Northern California, according to local weather station data compiled by NOAA. Additionally, new daily records for snowfall and temperature lows were broken nearly 400 times.
Of course, snowfall and freezing temperatures are not unusual this time of year in states like Maine or Wyoming – just as 80°F temperatures are not uncommon in Florida or Texas. But in 2026, multiple U.S. counties have reported both heavy snowfall and temperatures approaching or exceeding 90°F during the first three weeks of April.
Using local weather station data compiled by NOAA’s Northeast Regional Climate Center, Climate Crisis 247 identified the places with the most extreme weather shifts so far this month. We listed all 10 U.S. counties that have received more than 5 inches of snow and where temperatures have exceeded 85°F in the first three weeks of April. Supplemental data on historical April climate norms by county are from NOAA’s Climate at a Glance program. Counties are listed in ranked order by total snowfall volume so far in April 2026.
The 10 counties on this list are spread across six states: Arizona, California, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Texas. Among them, high temperatures so far this month range between 86°F and 93°F. In these same places, total snowfall has been between 5.5 and 15 inches in the last three weeks.
