The Entire List Of 100 Species $200 Million Is Meant To Save
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund, Leonardo DiCaprio, Age of Union and the Todd Graves Family Foundation launched an initiative called the The Phoenix Species Project. Its goal was “to bring 100 of the world’s most threatened species back from the brink.”
The project is immensely complex. The species are spread across the world. Of the list, 25 are mammals, 15 are birds, 22 are reptiles, 15 are amphibians, 8 are fish, 3 are sharks and rays, and 3 are invertebrates.
Not everyone agreed that the project was based on generosity. The Independent reports, “Their venture has been met with swift criticism, with many accusing the pair of ‘greenwashing,’ a deceptive marketing tactic in which organizations portray themselves as environmentally friendly while concealing a broader negative environmental impact.”
On top of skepticism about motives was the issue of whether even this large a sum could be effective. According to the Natural History Museum, “Recent studies estimate about eight million species on Earth, of which at least 15,000 are threatened with extinction.”
