NFL Teams Most Exposed to Severe Weather in November

The NFL season lasts through the entirety of the fall season and into the winter–and most teams in the league play in open air-stadiums. From New England and the Mid-Atlantic out to the Great Plains and the Upper Midwest, many of the teams from the parts of the country with the harshest winters are the same teams without fully enclosed facilities. As a result, as the season progresses, weather often has a growing impact on games.

For many NFL teams, exposure to the elements on game day is a deliberate choice. The Buffalo Bills, for example, are currently playing their first season in a brand new, $2.1 billion, open-air stadium. Subject to regular lake effect storms, Buffalo is one of the snowiest places in the country. Harsh winter weather has come to be associated with the team’s identity, and may even offer and may even offer an additional homefield advantage–at least when games are not postponed by weather conditions.

Since late 2010, seven NFL games have been either delayed or relocated due to severe winter weather conditions, including both snow and ice. While November is the final full month before winter begins, there are parts of the country where November snowfall is not uncommon–and many of these same places are home to open-air NFL stadiums.

Using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Climate Crisis 247 identified the NFL teams at greatest risk of severe weather this month. We ranked all teams that play home games in open-air stadiums on the highest reported November snowfall in and around their home field. Only snowfall totals from the 20th century or later were considered. Supplemental data on monthly average temperatures and snowfall are also from NOAA.
