Just over a year ago, the Trump administration dealt a devastating blow to the U.S. electric vehicle market. Under the terms of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit was terminated on October 1, 2025. Before that date, qualified buyers could claim a $7,500 tax credit with the purchase of a new EV. After those benefits expired, consumer demand for EVs cratered in the United States, with sales falling by nearly 50% quarter over quarter.

A new report from Cox Automotive shows that the EV segment is steadily gaining market share once again this year–but improvements have been incremental. Between July and October, Americans bought an estimated 262,649 EVs, a 6.1% increase from second quarter sales. Still, sales volume from the most recent quarter are dwarfed by Q3 2025 sales volume of 437,487 units, a record-high.

In this environment, automakers are struggling to draw customers. In the first nine months of 2026, even some of the most popular EV models have seen double-digit sales declines compared to the first three quarters of 2025.

Using data from Cox Automotive, Climate Crisis 247 identified the EV models with the largest year-over-year sales declines. We ranked all EV models with available data on the relative change in unit sales between the first nine months of 2025 and the first nine months of 2026. Only models with a sales volume of at least 10,00 units in the first three quarters of last year were considered. Models that have been discontinued, temporarily or otherwise, were not considered. Supplemental data on MSRP ranges are as reported by Car and Driver, an auto industry publication.
