AI server farms consume massive amounts of electricity. In some parts of the country, like Alexandrra, electricity generation is at the highest capacity possible. That means competition with resident and legacy businesses. It is time for companies that need more electricity to look somewhere else. On the list are cities like Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. They have electricity capacity that has not been overwhelmed by AI server needs.

Axios points out, “The Midwest is emerging as one of the nation’s fastest-growing data center hubs, with development stretching from Kansas and Iowa to Great Lakes states like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.”  These are places which do not eat electricity for air conditioning that way that areas in the South do,

Profits From Server Farms

Axios also points out that local governments must consider what AI server farms will do with residential electricity rates. Also, server farms can use precious water.

One financial advantage companies that want to build server farms have is nearly infinite money. Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon have committed to spending well over $100 billion together. President Trump has assembled a consortium that says it will spend another $500 billion.

Larger server farms could transform local economies regarding taxes and new jobs. This will be particularly attractive in areas where employment numbers are not growing.
