Among the nation’s largest cities, Detroit had the highest percentage of people without power over the study period. Its number was 44.8%. San Francisco followed at 36.3%
The outages varied by household type. “Homeowners were more affected by power outages than renters: 28.3% of homeowners reported a power outage compared to 19.9% of renters.”
The three primary reasons for the outages were natural causes, including weather, human errors, which caused malfunctions, and overloads during periods of high use, such as warm weather.
The primary difficulties caused by power outages were spoiled food, a need to stay at another residence, and missed work.
