India Could Be Ruined By Coal
India may replace China as the world’s super-emerging economy. Its population continues to grow. A pro-business government has helped India’s surging GDP. However, India may have more climate problems than any nation because of its geographical size, population, and environmental challenges. Eventually, some of India’s largest cities may not be habitable for many residents–particularly the poor.

A new study shows that India has tried to curb greenhouse gases but has had to burn coal. Coal cannot be replaced by renewable energies fast enough to lower its use sharply. According to Bloomberg, “Electricity consumption in India is growing at the fastest rate of any major economy, driven by rising temperatures and incomes, which have pushed up sales of power-intensive appliances like air conditioners.” Old, huge, and inefficient coal plants can’t be closed.
India already faces temperatures in some cities, which often rise above 110 degrees F. These are above levels that are safe for humans. They will continue to rise, and the number of sweltering days will as well. These cities are also choked by air pollution. The combination is deadly.
Rain Storms
India has also been hit by massive tropical cyclones, equivalent to hurricanes. Some have dropped 10 inches of rain in a matter of a day and made landfall close to some of India’s largest metro areas. Scientists believe that climate change has caused more violent storms.
Coal burning is not India’s only problem, but it appears to make other severe problems worse.
