India’s Solar Growth In Danger

India ranks third in the world in terms of carbon emissions behind China and the US. It ranks second behind China in the use of coal. However, it ranks fifth in renewables, accounting for only 13% of China’s total. Solar has shown promising growth in India, but this growth is starting to hit a wall.

According to Nikkei Asia, this explosion in solar production has begun to tax the nation’s grids. And, there are not enough battery facilities to store the electricity generated. A Semafor analysis shows, “Solar power now makes up around a quarter of India’s total energy capacity, but a battery-storage shortfall is threatening the country’s green energy transition.”

The Grid’s Problem

It is challenging to model, but there is a possibility that Americans may face a similar issue.  The US grids are weak in most cases. And, many locations that generate renewable energy are not connected to the grid at all. Solving these infrastructure problems can be expensive. The current administration is not likely to support upgrades. That means the energy source for electricity already linked to grids will have an inside track. This is particularly beneficial for natural gas and coal.

Part of the solution to greenhouse gas emissions in almost every nation in the world is not just adding renewables as a source of electricity. It is also getting it from one place to another.
