Ford’s Fantastic Future
Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley, is more fond of making projections than anyone in the global car business–even Elon Musk. Most of Farley’s forecasts about Ford’s EV future, regarding product launches, sales, and investments, have been well off course. What he once described as Ford’s eventual leadership in the EV industry has almost certainly disappeared permanently.

Farley’s latest, unprovable prediction is that Ford will have a $30,000 EV in less than two and a half years. He would not say why his prediction might be accurate. The work to launch the product(s) is being done in Ford’s “skunkworks.” This may be the same group that helped launch the ill-fated F-150 Lighting. Ford changed the price of Lightning four times in one year. It also had several production glitches.
Ford’s CEO Misses
“You have to make a radical change as an [automaker] to get to a profitable EV. The first thing we have to do is really put all of our capital toward smaller, more affordable EVs,” Farley told CNBC. Farley has no proof of what EV customers might want in the future unless he has market research he doesn’t want to share with the press and the public.
Farley appears to know that the small vehicles Americans have rejected for SUVs and pickups will return. He did not mention that Ford had phased entirely out this part of its model line just a few years ago.
