Waymo, Google’s self driving car business, says it is safer than human drivers. The software has operated a few cars that got in accidents. However, it is being tested in several cities. Odds are that it will be the first self-driving system that gets broad adoption. It will drive people, but will lower the use of fossil fuels by a meaningful number. That answer may be “no.”

One benefit, Google says, is that Waymo can work on a number of car models. Unlike Tesla’s self driving feature that only works on Teslas.

One fiction is that Waymo is designed for EVs. The fact of the matter is that it works on a broad array of vehicles. If US EV sales remain 15% of total industry sales, it will be critical that Waymo can power all of these, or at least Google can say it is an option.
