100-Degree Heat to Arrive in the Southwest, Weeks Ahead of Schedule

While the northern United States is just coming out of a cold front that delivered subnormal temperatures and heavy rain for weeks, an intense, early-season heat wave is setting upon the Southwest. Over the next few days, a powerful dome of high pressure will drive temperatures into the triple digits in dozens of cities throughout California, Arizona, and Texas, triggering heat advisories and raising the risk of wildfire, heat-related illness, and death.

Forecast models from the NOAA show that temperatures will top 100°F weeks before normal in a handful of cities. In Eagle Pass, Texas, for example, temperatures will hit 100.8°F on Friday – nearly eight degrees above normal, and weeks ahead of the city’s normal first triple-digit temperature day. In other cities, temperatures will be below normal, despite surpassing the 100°F threshold. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that will see triple digit temperatures this week.

To determine the cities that will experience triple digit temperatures this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed temperature forecasts and historical station-level daily temperature readings from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on average forecast maximum temperature for June 3 to June 6, 2025. Supplemental data on climate normals are from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily program of the National Centers for Environmental Information and are based on temperature observations for 2006 to 2020. Only cities with at least 1,000 residents were considered.
