Summer is getting noticeably hotter. Hundreds of municipalities break heat records every week, with average temperatures across the country rising every year. In 2024, average summer temperatures exceeded historical 20th century normals by at least 5°F in 41 counties, representing nearly 19 million Americans.

This week, forecasters are warning that temperatures will exceed historical normals in dozens of counties. There are 213 counties under heat advisories from the National Weather Service -- approximately 12% of the country.

The most brutal temperature deviations will be in the Northeast, with pockets of Vermont and New Hampshire set to experience temperatures more than 10°F above normal. The Pacific Northwest will also experience significant temperature anomalies, concentrated in the western parts of Oregon and Washington. Meanwhile, Montana and the Dakotas will experience temperatures more than 5°F below normal for the summer months. A closer look at the data reveals the counties where temperatures will be abnormally high this week.

To determine the counties where temperatures will be abnormally high this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on historical temperature observations and temperature forecasts from the NOAA. Counties were ranked based on the difference in average forecast temperature for the period July 16-18, 2025 and historical average temperatures for June through August for the years 1901 to 2000. Supplemental data on population are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
