As Heat Wave Blankets the Northeast, These Cities Will See the Largest Temperature Anomalies

An unusual jet stream pattern is pushing extreme heat into unexpected corners of the U.S. this week, sending temperatures soaring well above seasonal norms across the Northeast and Great Lakes.

While early-season heat waves are becoming more common, the incoming heat dome could bring dangerous, triple-digit temperatures to some cities for the first time in recorded history. In cities like Worcester, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island, daily highs are forecast to climb more than 20°F above the historical average.

This dramatic warming is the result of a stalled high-pressure system centered over the eastern U.S. that is allowing hot, stagnant air to settle over densely populated regions from Michigan to Connecticut. Cities accustomed to mild early-summer weather are now facing triple-digit highs, putting stress on power grids, public health systems, and infrastructure built for cooler conditions. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that will experience the greatest temperature anomalies this week.

To determine the cities where it will be abnormally hot this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed 72-hour temperature forecasts and historical station-level daily temperature readings from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the difference between the forecast minimum temperature for June 23-26, 2025, and the average observed minimum temperature for June 23-26 from 2006 to 2020. Gridded forecast data are from the National Digital Forecast Database, while historical temperature normals are from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily program of the National Centers for Environmental Information. Weather stations were matched to places using nearest neighbor analysis and were limited to cities within 50 miles of the city centroid. Only cities with at least 100,000 residents were considered.
