This week meteorologists are tracking what could be one of the larger winter storm systems of the season. Winter Storm Freya is currently forecast to deliver several inches of snow in dozens of cities throughout the Midwest and Northeast, with dangerous ice accumulation that could create hazardous conditions and costly delays for travelers in affected areas.

The storm is forecast to bring flurries and freezing rain to some of the nation’s busiest airports. Several East Coast airports are in areas forecast to experience “major” winter storm impacts, during which the NOAA recommends to avoid travel if possible. A closer look at NOAA forecasting data reveals the airports that could experience the worst winter weather this week.

To determine the airports that could get battered by Winter Storm Freya, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on winter storm severity, snow forecasts, and ice forecasts from the NOAA. Airports with at least 5 million annual passengers were ranked based on an index of winter storm severity probability, forecast snow accumulation, and forecast ice accumulation for the period February 5 to 7, 2025.

• Forecast snow accumulation: 1-2 inches

• Annual traffic: 24.6 million passengers

• Winter storm severity probability: 20% chance of moderate impacts
• Forecast snow accumulation: 1 inch

13. Kansas City International Airport (Kansas City, MO)

• Winter storm severity probability: 5% chance of moderate impacts
• Forecast snow accumulation: 0 inches
