Over the next 72 hours, temperatures will fall more than 8°F below historical November normals in 64 major cities, affecting more than three million people.

The cold front is forecast to dip relatively far southward, bringing temperatures in some traditionally warmer climates more than 12°F below normal minimums. Temperatures in Flagstaff, Arizona, for example, are forecast to drop to 17°F on Saturday night, during which time it will briefly be the coldest major city in America. Other cities along the East Coast are experiencing abnormal lows simultaneously. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities where temperatures will be abnormally low for the rest of the week.
To determine the cities where it will be abnormally cold this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed raster data on minimum air temperature forecast for the next three days from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities were ranked based on the difference from historical average minimum temperatures for November and the minimum forecast overnight temperature for November 14 to 16, 2024. Data on historical climate normals for November 2000 to 2023 are from the NOAA and are at the county level. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and are five-year estimates for 2022.
