While climate change continues to reshape weather patterns and increase the likelihood of extreme events, the likelihood of an unseasonably warm, pleasant day in the middle of a cold month also increases.

This week, much of the country will experience a “second summer,” with temperatures forecast in the 60s and 70s, more than 20 degrees above normal October averages. A closer look at the data reveals major cities in the Midwest, California, and Massachusetts where temperatures will be unseasonably warm over the next few days.
To determine the cities where temperatures will be abnormally warm this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on temperature forecasts from the National Digital Forecast Database and historical climate normals from the National Centers for Environmental Information of the NOAA. County seats were ranked based on the difference between the forecast temperature average for October 21 through 23 and average temperature for October from 1901 to 2000. Cities with at least 100,000 residents were considered. Data is at the county level.
