This week, an early-season heat wave is gripping much of the Southwest, with triple-digit highs stretching from Texas to California and into the desert basins of Arizona and Nevada. Forecasts show that parts of the Phoenix metro area will soar above 115°F, pushing power grids, public health systems, and city infrastructure to the brink even before the official start of summer.

While 100°F days are not abnormal for the Southwest this time of year, the heat wave will push temperatures far beyond normal for much of the Midwest. Temperatures are forecast to reach well above 95°F in Denver, ranking the metro area among the hottest major cities nationwide for the week. Other cities outside the region like Raleigh and Baltimore will also see abnormal highs. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities that will be the hottest this week.

To determine the major cities where it will be hottest this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed 72-hour temperature forecasts and historical station-level daily temperature readings from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the forecast maximum temperature for June 18 to June 20, 2025. Gridded forecast data are from the National Digital Forecast Database and were averaged to place boundaries using spatial data from the Census Bureau. Only cities with at least 250,000 residents were considered.
