While hundreds of cities are breaking daily heat records for late June, some cities will experience triple-digit temperatures for the first time ever. In at least a dozen cities stretching from Virginia to Massachusetts, temperatures are forecast to top 101°F for the first time since records began in the late 1800s. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that will experience highs of 101°F and above for the first time ever this week.

To determine the cities that will experience 101°F temperatures for the first time, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on temperature forecasts from the National Digital Forecast Database of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the difference in forecast maximum temperature for the period June 23 to June 25 and the highest historical temperature ever observed. Data on observed temperatures are from the NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network program and were matched to cities using nearest neighbor analysis. Only cities with at least 5,000 residents were considered.
