Major Heat Wave to Bring Triple-Digit Heat, Break Records in New York, Other Northeast Cities

The first major heat wave of the summer is tightening its grip on the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with daily high temperatures threatening to break centuries-old records. The scorching forecast follows on the heels of historic Saharan dust intrusions that blanketed much of the South in recent weeks, highlighting the growing intensity and unpredictability of summer weather.

The persistent heat dome – fueled by a northward bulge in the jet stream – has settled over a wide stretch of the Eastern Seaboard, pushing temperatures into the triple digits across cities from Virginia to Massachusetts. Forecasts show highs well above normal, in some cases approaching or exceeding previous all-time records for late June. And with more than 50 million people under heat alerts, the heat dome could have serious health consequences.

The heat wave marks a dramatic shift from average conditions, with temperatures across parts of New England and the Mid-Atlantic projected to soar up to 10°F above historical records set over a century ago. While cities like Phoenix and Dallas are used to 100°F days, places like Worcester, Massachusetts, and Waterbury, Connecticut, are experiencing life-threatening heat this early in the year for the first time. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that will break heat records this week.

To determine the cities most likely to break heat records this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed 72-hour temperature forecasts and historical daily records from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the gap between forecast highs for June 23-26, 2025, and historical maximum temperatures for those dates. Gridded forecast data are from the National Digital Forecast Database, while historical temperatures are from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily program of the National Centers for Environmental Information. Weather stations were matched to places using nearest neighbor analysis and were limited to cities within 50 miles of the city centroid. Only cities with at least 20,000 residents were considered.
