Polar Vortex Bringing Brutal, Record Cold To These Counties

While 17 states had their warmest year on record last year, 2025 has been off to an abnormally cold start. The polar vortex – the large, low pressure mass of cold air that maintains the North Pole’s arctic conditions – has moved hundreds of miles farther south than usual this year. The polar vortex’s southerly displacement has caused regular outbreaks of Arctic air in the United States, and exposed over 100 million Americans to subzero temperatures.

Buried! The 25 Snowiest Days in US History
In January, the average temperature was 29.2°F in the United States, the 33rd coldest January on record. Some parts of the country experienced much colder extremes, with average daily temperatures ranking among the top 10 coldest Januarys in recorded history. A closer look at the data reveals the counties where it is most abnormally cold this year, and serves as a reminder of how climate change can contribute to anomalies of both extreme heat and extreme cold.
To determine the counties where it is abnormally cold this year, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on current and historical temperature records from the NOAA. Counties were ranked based on how the average daily temperature in January 2025 ranks in monthly records going back to 1895.
