A rare winter storm is currently sweeping through the Gulf Coast region of the United States, bringing sleet, snow, and arctic temperatures to what are normally the warmest parts of the country. Most counties spanning from southern Texas to the Carolinas are under blizzard or winter storm warnings, with some counties forecast to receive multiple inches of snow for the first time in recorded history.

Per NOAA data, there are 99 counties forecast to break current records for 72-hour snowfall accumulation this week. Some Louisiana counties are projected to receive up to 12 inches of snow over the next three days, more than tripling prior snowfall records. The historic storm is one of the first severe weather events of 2025, and a reminder that global warming can lead to anomalies of both extreme hot and extreme cold.
