While plenty of Americans across the country got their wishes for a white Christmas granted last week, this week will see harsh winter storms with minor to moderate impacts in major cities across the country.

As two winter storms move concurrently throughout the Northwest and Northeast, over 40 cities will experience at least a 20% chance of winter storm impacts, affecting 3.7 million Americans. A look at NOAA data reveals the cities most likely to be impacted by winter storms this week.

To determine the cities directly in the path of the post-Christmas winter storm, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on the Probabilistic Winter Storm Severity Index from NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center. Cities with at least 25,000 residents were ranked based on the probability that they would experience minor to major impacts from a winter storm between December 30, 2024 and January 2, 2025. The overall WSSI is based on 16 separate data elements, including snow accumulation forecast, ice accumulation forecast, and wind gust forecast. Supplemental data on population are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
