As climate change heats the planet, cities will continue to break new temperature records at an astonishing pace. The anomalies of yesterday will become the new normals of tomorrow, which will continue to climb to hotter and more dangerous extremes.

Last week, dozens of cities broke new daily temperature records. Nearly 200 weather stations recorded new daily highs during the week ending December 21st, with some cities shattering prior maximums by more than 5.0°F. A look at NOAA data reveals the cities that broke temperature records this week by the greatest amount.

To determine the cities that broke temperature records last week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed historical data from the NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network. Cities that set new daily maximum highs on December 16, 17, or 18 were ranked based on the difference in new record high from the prior record. Only weather stations with at least 100 years of data in cities with at least 30,000 residents were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
