Last month, the average temperature in the contiguous United States was 34.9°F, about 1.0°F warmer than the centennial average for 1901 to 2000 and the 52nd warmest February on record. While last month was a relatively mild February by recent standards, some fast-warming counties experienced their hottest February on record.

Change in scenery? These Cities Have the Most Diverse Climates

This past winter was abnormally cold in much of the country, due in part to a shifting polar vortex that exposed millions of Americans to regular outbreaks of Arctic air. Despite the polar vortex’s southerly displacement, a cluster of counties in the hottest part of the country continued to get hotter. In total, 16 counties experienced their hottest February on record. A closer look at the data reveals the fast-warming counties where climate change continues to accelerate.

To determine the places that had their warmest February on record, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on current and historical temperature records from the NOAA. Counties that set temperature records last month were ranked based on the difference between the average temperature in February 2025 and the average February temperature during the 1901-2000 baseline.
