The Fourth of July is one of the biggest outdoor days of the year, with millions of Americans congregating outside to grill out and enjoy fireworks. While Independence Day promises to be relatively comfortable this year – save for Florida, where a low pressure system off the Atlantic Coast is forecast to bring heavy rainfall – in some years the holiday has brought sweltering, dangerous temperatures.

In 1919, a summer heat wave brought temperatures to 100.0°F in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, setting the record for the Fourth of July. New York City hit 98.1°F, nearly 10°F higher than the forecast maximum for this year. A closer look at the data reveals the hottest Fourths of July in history in the country’s largest cities.

To determine the hottest Fourths of July in history, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed historical station-level weather observations from the NOAA’s Global HIstorical Climatology Network. Cities are ordered by population. Weather stations were matched to cities using nearest neighbor analysis. Only stations with at least 50 years of data were considered. Supplemental data on forecast maximums for July 4, 2025 are from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database.
