On Thursday, Reuters reported that the Trump administration is planning to end the $7,500 consumer tax credit for electric vehicle purchases as part of a larger tax reform project.

While support for EV rebates correlates strongly with liberal political beliefs, there are a number of Republican-leaning counties that support the tax measure. Nationwide, there are 76 counties that Trump won in 2020 where support for EV rebates is greater than the 73.7% national average, per data from the MIT Election Lab and Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. Some red counties with the most support for EV and renewables rebates – like Mineral County, Colorado, and Warren County, New York – rank near the top of all counties with the most EV chargers per resident.

The conflict between fossil fuels and green energy is one that is likely to continue as Tesla CEO Elon Musk becomes more prominent in the Trump administration and Republican-leaning states continue to benefit disproportionately from green energy. A closer look at the data reveals the Republican-leaning counties support the EV tax credit the most.

To determine the red counties that want to keep the EV tax credit the most, Climate Crisis reviewed data on climate change belief from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. Counties where Trump received the lion’s share of votes in 2020 were ranked based on the percentage of surveyed residents who answered that they “somewhat” or “strongly support” providing tax rebates for energy-efficient vehicles or solar panels in 2023. Supplemental data used to calculate the number of public EV fueling stations per capita was based on station location data from the Department of Energy. Election results are from the MIT Election Lab.
