Electric vehicle sales have been rising steadily for years in the United States. According to the International Energy Agency, domestic EV unit sales increased from about 200,000 in 2020 to 1.2 million in 2024. Most recently, a report from Kelley Blue Book found that Americans bought nearly 300,000 new EVs in the first quarter of 2025, up 11.4% from Q1 2024. Yet, while EVs continue to gain traction with American motorists, widespread adoption remains elusive, as EVs account for fewer than 1-in-10 new vehicle registrations nationwide.

While there are any number of reasons most car buyers still prefer internal combustion engine vehicles, one of the most commonly cited is a phenomenon known as “range anxiety” – a fear of having insufficient battery power to make it to a destination or charging station. Such concerns are not entirely unfounded, as public-use EV chargers remain far less common in the U.S. than gas stations. Additionally, while Direct Current Fast Chargers can bring an EV battery to 80% capacity in a half hour or less, slower Level 1 and Level 2 chargers can take half a day or more.

Importantly, however, EV infrastructure is expanding rapidly in the United States. Government data shows that the number of EV charging stations has more than doubled since 2020, and that an estimated 60% of Americans now live within 2 miles of a public charger. Additionally, just as certain internal combustion engine vehicles can go farther on a single tank of gas than others, some EV models can cover much more ground between charges than others.

Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, Climate Crisis 247 identified the EVs that can go the farthest on a single charge. We reviewed data on hundreds of EV makes, models, and configurations and identified those with the highest estimated range for combined city and highway driving. For each EV make and model, we only considered the trim level with the highest estimated range. As a result, each make and model on this list are also available in trim levels with a lower estimated range than is noted in this story. All supplemental data is also from the EPA and DOE.

Among the 20 EVs on this list, the maximum range on a single charge for combined city and highway driving is at least 320 miles. Half a dozen of these vehicles can go over 400 miles before needing a recharge. While the vehicles on this list lead the EV market in range, they are not necessarily the most efficient EVs, as range is product not only of efficiency, but also battery capacity. Lower efficiency vehicles on this list derive their range from their greater battery capacity, and therefore have higher estimated annual charging costs – which assumes about 15,000 driving miles per year.

It is important to note that charging times noted in this story are for Level 2, 240v charging stations, which EV owners commonly have installed at their home. Many public-use chargers are DC fast chargers, capable of recharging EV batteries in a fraction of the time Level 2 chargers take.
