Grand Canyon Wildfire Smoke Sickens Detroit
Smoke from the Dragon Bravo wildfire in the Grand Canyon has reached as far east as Detroit. The fire which has burned close to 150,000 acres is only about 20% contained. That means the smoke spread east could thicken, with health and economic hazards rising.
Yesterday, Detroit had the world air quality of any large city in the world. That includes cities in India where the air is often close to poisonous
Detroit has a poverty rate of 33% which is the highest of any large city in the US. The poor are less likely to have air conditioning, which can filter smoke and give some degree of protection from smoke when they are indoors
Air Conditioning
The challenge of the effects of wildfire smoke could not have been anticipated. There was no reason to expect New York City would be blackened with dangerous smoke from hundreds of miles north in Canada. The same holds true for Detroit and Chicago.
There is little these cities can do as the largest cities in India know. The smoke can cover hundreds of square miles. And, it often comes during the summer when smoke is married to air pollution
In some ways, American cities have started to share air problems similar to those which have existed in China and India, and in Los Angeles when it was the “smog capital of the world” in 1970. At least clear air legislation was able to eliminate that.
