Phoenix Temperature Hits Record 99 Degrees

The temperature in Phoenix hit 99 degrees F. This is a record and the first time it has recorded a number that high so early in the year. Last year, Phoenix had over 100 days during which the temperature was over 100 degrees F–another record. The trend raises the issue of how long the city can operate without major changes to how people are housed and transported.

Several hundred people died of the heat in Phoenix last year.

Construction Industry

Some industries need to shut down completely when temperatures are this high. Construction is a case in point. Given how fast the city has been growing, this is a significant development,

Phoenix also has hundreds of homeless people. Some need to be transported to public facilities with air conditioning to stay alive. The logistics of this are complicated and require sweeping parts of the city regularly.

Electricity use in the US has spiked, as in other nations with extremely hot weather. AI server farms are starting to run out of supply, and in some regions, electricity is shut off temporarily to keep the grid from collapsing.

Shortage Of Electricity

The challenge with extra electricity generation is that sometimes facilities are not available. In other cases, utilities need to use fossil fuels for systems that are already in place.

Phoenix must prepare for another record-hot summer and a future for which it is unprepared.
