100+ Degree Temperatures Forecasted for Millions Across these Southwest Cities
The first week of July 2026 brought a deadly heatwave to large swathes of the United States. Local weather station data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that nearly 500 daily high temperature records were broken in the U.S. between July 1st and 4th alone, as the mercury rose into the triple digits from New York to Texas. Over the July Fourth weekend, more than 160 million Americans were under extreme heat advisories, and dozens of heat-related deaths were reported across New York and New Jersey. While temperatures have since reverted closer to mean in much of the Northeast, in other parts of the country, there is little relief in sight.
For the remainder of this week and into the weekend, 100-plus degree temperatures are expected in major cities across more than half a dozen states stretching from the Midwest to the Pacific Coast. The National Weather Service has already issued extreme heat warnings for hundreds of thousands of people across parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.
Even though July is the hottest month in the United States, this week’s temperatures are expected to surpass seasonal norms – in many cases, by a wide margin. From now until the end of the week, triple digit temperatures are forecasted to impact more than 1.8 million Americans.
Using data from the Southeast Regional Climate Center, Climate Crisis 247 identified the U.S. cities where temperatures are expected to top 100°F every day for the rest of this week. We reviewed predicted average daily highs in over 400 American cities and metro areas and listed the 10 where forecasts call for 100-plus degree temperatures every day between Wednesday, July 8th, and Friday, July 10th. Supplemental data on local populations are five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey, and only cities and metro areas with populations of at least 10,000 were considered.
