Americans Divided About Climate Change

Several recent polls show that Americans are wary of climate change deniers, but the latest survey about the issue points in the other direction. A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research says that approximately 70% of people have experienced severe climate weather recently. Fifty-five percent say they have suffered the effects of very cold or very hot weather.

The authors wrote, “Relatively few feel that climate change has already had a major impact in their lives, but many think it will impact them in the future.”

Government Assistance

When it comes to money, many believe that the government should assist in disasters. “Six in 10 adults favor the federal government providing money for residents either to make their properties better protected from extreme weather events or to rebuild their property in the same community.” This is particularly important because people in climate-challenged areas are uninsured. Some of these have faced sharp increases in their insurance rates. Many cannot get insurance, which influences housing prices.

Oil companies are often blamed for global warming. Several states and cities have filed suits against these companies to pay damages for years of polluting the environment. The poll shows that about half of Americans believe oil companies “should be held responsible.” About half of respondents do not.

Deep Concerns About Future

While the public’s perception of climate change has moved toward deep concerns, the views are by no means unanimous.
