Climate Crisis AM  2/19/24 World Running Out Of Fresh Water

In a new study from the Center for Strategic and International Studies titled “Troubled Waters: Understanding Global Water Security,” the authors comment half the world’s population lives in high water stress conditions, defined as high water stress for at least one month per year. By 2050, water demand is expected to rise from 20% to 25%. The world currently uses 4 trillion cubic meters of water per year. “Population growth, demographic change, economic development, and the requisite need for increased agricultural production have led to unsustainable levels of freshwater use and degradation.” As is often the case, the study does not present any realistic way to improve the situation substantially.

Climate change and weather have made the world’s food crisis worse. According to Mongabay, “Globally, as the impacts of climate change become increasingly evident, food security continues to erode on all fronts: availability, access, utilization and stability. With rising temperatures and projected levels of atmospheric CO2 in the upcoming years, we can expect more frequent extreme weather events, diminished nutritional value in staple foods, smaller harvests and an uptick in food prices.”

EPA Backs Down

The EPA may delay rules on emissions meant to cut down global warming. Among the reasons is that car companies are pressuring the admission as demand for EVs slows. The Washington Post reports that “Rather than mandating a rapid increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales in the coming years, the agency could delay these requirements until after 2030, the two people said.” EV sales by the major auto companies are close to zero. Even Tesla says it expects its sales rate to slow this year.
