Fake News Makes Climate Change Worse

IPIE published a paper titled “Information Integrity about Climate Science: A Systematic Review.” Its primary conclusion was “The findings of this study indicate that powerful actors—including corporations, governments, and political parties—intentionally spread inaccurate or misleading narratives about anthropogenic climate change.” In other words, fake news about the climate.

The damage of this is almost immeasurably bad in a world where hundreds of millions of people do not know the difference between what is accurate and what they see on social media. Social media is a widely known source of lies or distorted facts. It is also poorly policed. The effects of this are exacerbated when important issues, such as major elections, are at stake.

The report examines data from 2015 to 2025. A primary conclusion. “The result is a decline in public trust, diminished policy coordination, and a feedback loop between scientific denialism and political inaction. There is a severe gap in research on climate information integrity.”

It is stunning the extent to which major, traditional media content is ignored. Most information about global warming, at least that which is correct, comes from these sources. This includes The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN.

These traditional sources have been replaced by Joe Rogan and millions of fake news postings online, particularly on social media.
