Global Temperature Is Expected To Surge Above Record

Last year was the hottest on record worldwide since the pre-industrial period. Scientists say that there is an 80% that the record will be topped in the next five years. Global warming is not slowing. It is accelerating.

The WMO wrote,

+80% chance that at least one of the next five years will exceed 2024 as the warmest on record

+86% chance that at least one of the next five years will be more than 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 Average

+70% chance that 5-year average warming for 2025-2029 will be more than 1.5 °C

+Long-term warming (averaged over decades) remains below 1.5°C

+Arctic warming is predicted to continue to outstrip the global average

+Precipitation patterns have big regional variations

Point Of No Return

Among the largest problems this presents is the rising sea level, which could cause flooding that will affect hundreds of millions of people.

“We have just experienced the ten warmest years on record. Unfortunately, this WMO report provides no sign of respite over the coming years, and this means that there will be a growing negative impact on our economies, our daily lives, our ecosystems and our planet,” said WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett.

This also means that the catastrophes forecast for the period from 2035 and beyond are highly likely. More than one climate model calls this the “point of no return” after which reversing the effects of climate change will be impossible.
