Green Clinics Offer Better Care

The AMA Journal Of Ethics recently published a paper titled “Green Clinics, Better Care.” In it, the authors wrote, “In many communities, the hospital and its associated satellite clinics were among the largest users of electric power and water.”

The authors noted that several large hospital chains, including Kaiser Permanente and New York Presbyterian, have begun convening groups to test their operational effects on the environment.

“In case after case, 10-30 percent savings in water and energy use proved to be achievable”, the authors reported. These savings could be as high as $15 billion over ten years.

Benefits From Construction

Part of the benefit came from the new construction. However, this construction repeatedly paid for itself in terms of environmental savings.

There is still a long way to go, meaning many green opportunities exist. “There are about 5,000 hospitals and more than 500,000 clinics in the US, many in older buildings.”

Of course, if these depend on any federal dollars, they may have to wait.
