Called the Winter Weather Outlook, the document covers December, January, and February and includes both precipitation and temperature forecasts. And the further south you go, the warmer it will get. That means Miami is usually about to have a warm winter.
One element will drive most of the abnormal temperatures, the report says. ”La Nina conditions are expected to develop later this fall and typically lead to a more northerly storm track during the winter months, leaving the southern tier of the country warmer and drier.”
Miami’s daily high temperature throughout the winter is usually 80 degrees F, but it has been as high as 90 degrees in December, such as in 2022. Meanwhile, last year Miami had the second highest temperatures on average of any winter since records have been kept, a sign that it, as in many places, is caught up in global warming.
Axios described the side-effects of these high temperatures: “In Florida, warmer winter temps can increase storm damages, harm coral reefs and increase the frequency of unpleasantly hot days.”
