Monkeys Killed By Extreme Heat –Most Important Climate News 5/23/24
Brutal heat is killing monkeys in Mexico. According to The New York Times, “The deaths of dozens of howler monkeys may be the latest sign of the danger extreme temperatures pose to wildlife around the world.” Climatecrisis247 believes this is one of thousands of species threatened by climate change. The Internation Fund for Animal Welfare reports that “It affects at least 10,967 species on the IUCN Red List, and projections suggest that if global temperatures increase by 2°C by 2100, about 18% of all species on land will face a high risk of going extinct.”

Texas Gets Expensive –Oil Prices Up 1,000%?
An investigation by Reuters, which used U.N. and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development data, shows that rich nations planned to give poor nations as much as $100 billion to help them lower greenhouse gas emissions and create programs to protect their populations from global warming effects. Much of this money was cycled back to rich countries via several methods. “By channeling money from the program back into their own economies, wealthy countries contradict the widely embraced concept that they should compensate poorer ones for their long-term pollution that fueled climate change…” Climatecrisis247 believes it is nearly impossible to provide enough capital to the scores of poor countries with no money to combat problems that already have caused deadly drought, massive storms, and flooding. The modest amount meant to come from rich nations was the only way to make an even modest effort to solve these problems. Money may never come.
Another EV Retreat
VW will slow its plans to bring EVs into the US because of what it calls “changing market dynamics.” According to Reuters, VW was going to launch its electric ID.7 sedan. Climatecrisis247 believes this is part of a more significant retreat from the US EV market, which includes domestic manufacturers Ford and GM. Even Tesla has had problems with faltering US sales. Until pricing, charging station count, and range issues are resolved, the EV market will not strengthen.
Congress Attacks Big Oil
Democrats in Congress have asked The Justice Department to investigate major oil companies for deceiving the public regarding their contribution to climate change. The memo from the US Senate Committee on The Budget read, “The joint investigation into ExxonMobil Corporation, Chevron Corporation, Shell Oil Company, BP America (BP), the American Petroleum Institute (API), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, uncovered new evidence of the fossil fuel industry’s pattern of deceptive claims regarding its products, their effects on the climate, and its plans to reduce emissions and combat climate change.” Climatecrisis247 believes this is the most recent investigation into whether fossil fuel companies misled the public. This includes several states and cities.
