Big, Dry Apple: New York City Goes A Month Without Rain, And Could Go Longer
On average, New York City gets three to six inches of rain in October. It has not rained a drop in 29 days, which is close to a record. It is not expected to rain for at least several more days.
*Drought Challenges
This year, the Northeast has been drier than normal. There have been drought and wildfire warnings in Massachusetts and Connecticut. It has also been unseasonably warm.
One of the strangest things about the lack of rain is that meteorologists have been warning that New York City will be plagued by rising rainfall and the floods that accompany it. Annual rainfall is expected to increase by 30% before 2100, but that is a long time away.
More Rain Than Expected
Shorter term, in August, major rainstorms were considered a threat to the Northeast. According to Bloomberg, “Heavy precipitation is on the rise in New York, Connecticut and neighboring states, increasing the likelihood of damaging flash floods.”
As is often the case with long range forecasts about weather patterns, no one knows that truth, which is part of the problem of how to live through aberrations.
