Can AI Save America’s Utilities?

There is persistent conversation about whether AI’s energy needs will tax the US electicity grid and the energy that runs it beyond current capacity. This sometimes includes the theory that AI fixes the problem it creates.

Some tech industry observers believe they can answer the question, because there are “opportunities for data centers to operate more flexibly and reduce their needs during peak demand periods,” according to Axios. Run properly, data center electricut installations might even send electricity back to the traditional grid. Additionally these new hubs could use renewable energy. That in itself creates a problem. There is still no evidence that nuclear, wind, or solar can scale quickly enough to keep pace with massive AI energy needs.

AI Needs

The idea that these hubs can send electricity back to the grid is, at this point, preposterous.

Many of options offered to create very large amounts of new energy are based, to some extent, on the ability of AI to help create the maps for the infrastructure, and perhaps build them. There is no proof that will work.
