Porsche EVs Sales Fall Apart –Most Important Climate News 7.23.24

Sports car company Porsche announced it was well behind its EV target ambitions. Management said that 80% of its sales by 2030 would be EVs. It changed that. Today, it said it could only reach that figure if customer demand justified it. The German company said, “The transition to electric cars is taking longer than we thought five years ago.” Two of its models are EVs. One is the Tacan sedan. The other is an electric-powered version of its popular crossover Macan. Climatecrisis247 believes that Porsche is the most recent car company to say consumer demand for EVs is insufficient to meet sales goals. And trends are such that, if anything, people still want gas-powered cars because they worry about charging time, range, and price. Even Ford Is Having Trouble Selling EVs

The Associated Press ran an article titled “Humans caused climate change. Amid the suffering, now they must solve it.” The solution, the writer says, is a quick pivot to green energy. The solutions to the problem are expensive, but so are the consequences of doing nothing. Doing nothing, for example, raises insurance rates where homes are vulnerable to heat and floods. Climatecrisis247 can’t determine why the AP would run an article on problems and solutions. It is an article which has been written hundreds of times before.

Cheap EVs

The prices of some EVs are falling quickly. The Wall Street Journal wonders if this will stimulate sales. One objection of potential buyers is that EVs are generally more expensive than gas-powered vehicles. The paper reports, “Car companies have cut their sticker prices for certain battery-powered models. Dealers and manufacturers are also dangling financing deals and cash rebates to draw in consumers, who in some cases can also pay less with the help of federal tax credits.” Climatecrisis247 believes that dropping prices only addresses one of the reasons people do not want EVs. Studies show that car buyers won’t consider EVs at all. Additionally, some EV owners will switch back to gas-powered cars. The industry’s success is still years away until most EV charging station numbers and ranges improve.

Too Hot In Phoenix

Phoenix temperatures will be above 90 degrees F for the next three days. This does not allow people, particularly the poor and those without air conditioning, to recover from the health threats of 110-degree temperatures during the day. Climatecrisis247 believes that this is occurring in cities around the world. Temperatures are so high both at night and during the day that tens of thousands of people will be ill, and hundreds will die. Last year, over 600 people died from heat in the Phoenix metro, and the figure is undercounted. It will be 110 degrees in Phoenix all week.
