Atoms alive! Why Google and Microsoft are turning to Nukes to Fuel their AI Boom
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to expand, Google is increasingly considering nuclear power to meet the massive energy demands arising from the hot new technology, with current forecasts suggesting that global power consumption by AI could match that of Japan within two years. The existing fossil fuel infrastructure is insufficient for the energy needs of AI data centers, while the growth of wind and solar energy remains inadequate. With this in mind, Google is exploring the introduction of small nuclear reactors, which are considered safer than older models. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s recent proposal to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant highlights renewed interest in an old form of nuclear energy.
