Flash flooding, usually brought on by dry ground which is overwhelmed by large amounts of water, has been a weather danger permanently. A new weather problem has become a part of the weather lexicon and may be just as dangerous.

“Flash droughts” can appear in a month or less. They are brought on by extreme temperatures plus a lack of rain that turns green vegetation into drug grass or bushes. The Guardian reports that these conditions get combined with high winds and changes in “solar radiation.”

The new phenomenon is a perfect storm as a cause for wildfires. And, they happen in such short periods that people do not have time to combat their effects. The share that characteristic with flash floods.

NOAA and Climate.gov have tracked flash drought in the US. Climate.gov was abandoned by the Trump Administration. The NOAA actually created a “flash drought intensity index” (FDII) which created alerts about when this problem emerged. The risk was mapped by NOAA.

Flash Flooding

Late last year, the NOAA tool was focused on the “central and southeastern U.S. as the regions with the strongest flash droughts.” In central and eastern regions of the US,. they were normally caused by low soil moisture.

The two primary problems with flash droughts is how quickly they form and the large areas they can cover.
