World’s Water Disasters Destroy Parts Of The Planet
The primary message of the 2024 Global Water Summit is that changes in the world’s water availability and location are undermining human survival in parts of the planet. “In 2024, the world broke new temperature records while precipitation extremes increased. Water-related disasters caused extensive impacts, with climate change contributing to the severity of floods, droughts, and cyclones.” Although the conclusion is not new, the extent to which the trouble is so widespread is alarming.
*The Future Of Water
The major floods world destroyed billions of dollars of property and killed untold numbers of people. Just one example of this shows the seriousness of the problem. Floods caused by Hurricane Helene destroyed parts of western North Carolina. Some of the damage will take years to repair if it is repaired at all in some areas. The storm killed at least 104 people and caused about $5 billion in damage.
US Hurricanes
Another major source of damage and deaths was three hurricanes that hit America’s Gulf Coast. They were part of a series of hurricanes that hit both the eastern and western hemispheres. Hurricane Beryl became a Category 5 storm early in the season. It destroyed parts of Mexico and parts of Houston. Hurricanes Beryl and Milton hammered the West Coast of Florida, and they moved inland.
Drought in America’s southwest has gotten some relief from storms off the Pacific. These storms incidentally did a great deal of damage to the coast of California. The rain will interrupt drought in these areas, but scientists say it will only briefly.
The large study ends with a warning. “The outlook for 2025 shows increased risks.”
