America’s Electricity Grid Is Falling Apart
Doug McIntyre and David Callaway discuss the economic challenges utilities face in upgrading the power grid, a crucial aspect of addressing the climate crisis. Despite solutions being available, utilities lack the necessary funds for grid updates, which are estimated to cost trillions. States and cities, also financially constrained, are unable to assist. Many grids are outdated, some being nearly 100 years old. The increasing energy demands from heating, AI, and Bitcoin mining exacerbate the problem, pushing the grid beyond its limits. Political debates over climate change further complicate the issue, transforming it into a cultural battle. However, when power outages occur, it becomes a pressing issue for those in government, making grid upgrades a priority. Unfortunately, significant action may only be triggered by a disaster, highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures to modernize the power infrastructure.
