According to AccuWeather, it will be over 80 degrees F each of the next 10 nights. On August 20, the number will be above 90 degrees. The fact that the city does not cool down from 110-degree days shows the danger to the population and the inability to recover from extreme heat. Phoenix set a record for 110 degree says last year.

A number of things happen when heat does not drop sharply at night after 100 degree plus days. One is that people who have been in the heat all day are more likely to have health problems. Emergency rooms traffic grows. The New York Times estimates that there were 120,000 heat related emergency room visits last year.

High Night Temperature Health Risk

Scientific American recently reported that “When temperatures stay high overnight, they place a particularly heavy burden on the body, raising the risk of heat illness and death.”

Work that might be done at night, when it cannot be done during that day, can often not resume when the sun goes down. This included construction. 24 hour high heat drops productivity.

Hot Nights More Common

As global warming continues, 90-degree nights will become more common. At this point, they are usually isolated in cities which include Las Vegas and Phoenix. Over the next few years, they will expand.
