How Shiftily it Shifts! New York Drought Warnings Replaced By Flood Alerts

After a month and a half of drought, which set records for its duration, it might seem odd that some areas near New York City are under a “coastal flood advisory” covering districts, including Long Island Sound. The warning states, “Do not drive vehicles through flooded areas. The water depth or fast flowing water/mud/debris from a flash flood will make road conditions unsafe.”

But now heavy rain is in the forecast for Thursday and Friday, and the news reminds us how quickly dangerous weather can change in the U.S. and worldwide, and is reminiscent of the recent drought in California, which was replaced by record rainfall and mudslides earlier this year. 

The rain is from a storm that pounded the Upper Midwest a day ago and dumped rain from as far north as Michigan, to the south as Virginia and east in upstate New York.

And just as the rainstorm is due to reach the East Coast, the West Coast faces a “bomb cyclone” set to bring floods and 70 mph winds to the California coast as it approaches from the Pacific.

While the financial effects of these two storm systems will be local, they also have a national component: Air travel is expected to be snarled as airports face what will almost certainly be significant flight delays.
