Massachusetts Homes Falling Into Ocean
Homes on Nantucket, part of Massachusetts, are falling into the ocean, and there is no solution.
The Wall Street Journal described the situation. In an area of the island called Sheep Pond Road, a home is about to be claimed by rising tides and high winds. The newspaper reports, “The land around the meandering road on the Massachusetts island’s south shore has ceded about 10 feet a year to the water for decades, claiming roughly half a dozen homes since the early 2000s.” Onshore wind speeds in the area can hit 60 miles per hour.
High Winds
The Nantucket situation is not unique. On the Outer Banks of North Carolina, beach erosion has swept nine homes into the ocean, and an analysis of the problem shows there will be more.
Rancho Palos Verdes homes are being pushed into the Pacific by mudslides caused by wildfires and heavy rain, and this erosion is expected to accelerate.
Global Warming
As global warming accelerates, the home distinction problems will worsen in Texas, Florida, and Queens. Many of these homes cannot be insured, meaning people who want to live in these areas face huge financial risks.
Eventually, the only sensible solution is for people to move inland. The dilemma is how far.
