Government Destroys Weather Service

The Trump Adminstions has begun dismantling parts of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The layoffs include about 800 people so far. One of its largest divisions is the National Weather Service.
Weather Forecasts
The functions of the National Weather Service are broad and extremely important. “National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy.” It is also responsible for about 90% of presidential-declared disasters. The organization claims climate and weather can affect $3 trillion of the US economy.
If the layoffs deepen, there are few alternatives beyond privately held Accuweather and Weather.com. AI-driven weather forecasting has started to emerge. One of the world’s largest tech companies recently announced an initiative. “NVIDIA Earth-2 Features First Gen AI to Power Weather Super-Resolution for Continental US” was launched last week.
Google And Nvidia Have Solutions
Google also has an AI weather service. GraphCast has been built as a next-generation forecast tool. The search company says, “Our state-of-the-art model delivers 10-day weather predictions at unprecedented accuracy in under one minute.”
As NOAA is partially shut down, AI solutions may begin to take on some of its tasks.
