People Can’t Afford Chocolate as Cocoa Prices Surge
Douglas McIntyre, Editor-in-Chief at Climate Crisis 24/7, reported from New York City on the rising threat to the global chocolate supply. A European Union study reveals that most European cocoa imports come from a few West African countries — including Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, and Nigeria — all of which are facing worsening climate and biodiversity issues. With cocoa prices more than doubling over the past year, chocolate manufacturers are raising prices, and consumers are already starting to push back. McIntyre warns that chocolate could become even more expensive and scarce in the near future.
